SlingMedia launches Symbian version

SlingMedia launches Symbian version SlingMedia, makers of the Slingbox place-shifting set-top box, is launching a Symbian version of its SlingPlayer technology. That will enable users to access content via their mobile phones.

SlingPlayer’s “Mobile for UIQ” for the Symbian operating system means that hugely popular phones like the Nokia N95 and Sony Ericsson W960i can now receive TV signals from the “parent” SlingMedia device. The technology is being launched at this week’s CTIA show (April 1-3, in Las Vegas).

SlingMedia says the company will roll out the system globally this summer, while the version for S60/Symbian phones will launch in the spring.

“We are excited to expand our support for Symbian smartphones, providing customers with the best possible mobile TV experience. With over two-and-a-half billion global 3G and WiFi connections the market potential for mobile TV is huge,” said Blake Krikorian, co-founder and CEO of Sling Media. “In order to meet this growing desire for mobile TV, we will continue to expand the availability of SlingPlayer Mobile to as many platforms and devices as possible. Adding SlingPlayer Mobile to such a cutting edge platform as UIQ on Symbian OS is a great step forward in expanding user accessibility to their home TV set-up.”

The SlingMedia software costs a one-time purchase of $29.99 (or £19.99).
