RCOM to buy WiMax firm eWave
RCOM will invest US$500mn on offering WiMax services across Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America, according to Punit Garg, CEO of Reliance Globalcom Reliance Communications (RCOM) plans to acquire UK-based eWave World to gain access to the WiMax wireless technology. He did not specify how much RCOM will pay for buying 90% of eWave. "With this acquisition, RCOM will be in a position to provide end-to-end solutions," Garg said. "We will have complete control over the chain of services we offer," he added. In February, the Mumbai-based company bought Anupam Global Soft in Uganda to help it start offering wireless and fixed-line phone and Internet services in the African nation. The company plans to spend as much as US$500mn over five years to set up a network in Uganda. Reliance Globalcom also plans to start offering fourth generation (4G) wireless services in as many as 50 countries by 2012, Garg said. The eWave acquisition will help RCOM gain access to airwaves and licenses to operate the WiMax services in several countries, including China, he said.
