Swedish broadcaster loses Nobel coverage deal after China censorship
Swedish broadcaster loses Nobel coverage deal after China censorship Sweden's TV4 has been dropped as the host broadcaster of the prestigious Nobel Prize ceremony after Chinese television censored a speech on freedom of expression, a Nobel Foundation official said Saturday.
The foundation claims TV4 violated its contract by letting China Central Television and Shanghai Media Group cut out parts of a speech by foundation Chairman Marcus Storch. Foundation spokesman Michael Sohlman said the incident was "very, very serious. Especially if you take the contents of the censored speech into account." TV4 was the only broadcaster allowed to film the ceremony and banquet. It then licensed the footage for use by stations around the world. In a statement on its Web site, the foundation said it "sees no other solution than to cancel its agreement," since the ceremony is a "bearer of the Nobel Foundation's most fundamental values." "The fact that it was censored as a consequence of TV4's actions is incompatible with the dissemination mandate," it said. In a statement, TV4 contested the move, saying it was the Chinese television stations that had breached their agreements with TV4. "The agreements with the Chinese companies contain far-reaching restrictions on interference with the broadcasts," TV4 Group Chairman Jan Scherman said, calling the censorship "unacceptable."
