BBC to show Six Nations on iPlayer
The BBC has struck a deal to make its Six Nations rugby union TV coverage available via the iPlayer from this weekend.
This will be the first major sporting event covered by the BBC to be made available to broadband users via the iPlayer.
Sports fans will be able to catch up with full match coverage of all Six Nations games via their computers for seven days after they are broadcast live on the BBC's TV and radio networks. Six Nations matches are also being simulcast live on the BBC Sport website.
The iPlayer deal is an extension to the contract struck by BBC Sport with the Six Nations organising body in October to exclusively broadcast the tournament in the UK until 2013.
Today's deal marks an important step for the BBC iPlayer, which has not up to now been able to offer sport, imported TV shows or films due to rights issues. BBC executives have made it a top priority to secure these rights.
"Rugby is quite a big sport in terms of online video viewing in the UK and while it is not the crown jewel of football it is a significant breakthrough for the iPlayer," said Arash Amel, an analyst at Screen Digest.Earlier this month the BBC revealed that the iPlayer had seen a bumper Christmas period after it launched its first marketing campaign for the broadband TV service, with around 3.5m programmes viewed in total.
