France Télécom doubles IPTV subs
France Télécom doubles IPTV subs Pascale Paoli Lebailly,
French telco France Télécom has nearly doubled its IPTV subscribers over the last year. Regarding the internet, ADSL customers were 7.6 million at the end of March, including 1.28m subscribers to Orange’s IPTV offer. Across Europe, the company had 1.41 million IPTV subscribers compared to 770,000 one year before. Video-on-demand is also progressing with the number of paid downloads more than doubling from 401,000 in the first quarter of 2007 to 1.064 million in the first quarter of 2008. France Télécom confirmed its financial objectives for 2008, after revenues over the first three months of 2008 grew 1.4% to reach €13.03bn, a figure above expectations. According to CEO Didier Lombard, France Télécom is healthy enough to “take part in the European consolidation of the sector”, as the French telco has already expressed its interest in Nordic company TeliaSonera. Western Europe’s mobile market, though nearing saturation, keeps backing France Télécom’s growth. In France, the telco holds 24.2 million subscribers for a 43.6% market share, and has raised its turnover by 3.3% to €2.47bn. However, the group has not released precise figures on the sales of exclusive product iPhone, repeating just it had gone above the 100,000 units sold. France Télécom’s initial objective was to reach 400,000 to 500,000 iPhones sold by the end of 2008.
