TataSky counters free box offer with price falls

Rose Major,

With competitor Dish TV offering free set-top boxes, Indian DTH operator TataSky has moved to establish its own offer, with a reduction in monthly subscription prices across all the platform’s packages.

TataSky’s mid-range Family Pack, with 90 channels including Star One, Sony, Discovery, History, Nat Geo, Channel V, MTV, Zee Cinema, Disney Channel, NDTV India, Cartoon Network and Nick, as well as various-language channels from ETV and Zee, has reduced in price from Rs250 a month to Rs200. The 110-channel Super Saver pack has reduced from Rs300 a month to Rs260.

Subscribers can also add premium packages at any time and for any length of time from any of the five basic packages. Premium packages include two sports packs and two lifestyle packs, as well as an education pack.

Vikram Kaushik, managing director and CEO of Tata Sky, said: "To ensure that every TV household in the country has access to digital quality entertainment at an affordable price, we have reduced the price of our current subscription packages. Further, we have introduced new monthly packages to provide our subscribers with the flexibility of subscribing to select premium channels, only when it is relevant to them, rather than paying for them through the year."

Zee TV-backed Dish TV is offering free set-tops to subscribers signing a year-long contract and paying up front for the service. TataSky, backed 20% by News Corp's Star TV, has complained to the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission that the move is anti-competitive.
