National Geographic sales coincide with accolade
National Geographic Television International (NGTI) has closed a deal with Spanish terrestrial TVE for a package of programmes, just as the National Geographic Society receives a prestigious award in the country.
TVE has acquired Mission Earth (1x52'), about the work of the Society from its inception to the present day, to show on its La2 channel; and Search For The Afghan Girl (1x52'), following Nat Geo's hunt for Sharbat Gula, whose photo, taken while she was a refugee, became an iconic image of the war-torn country, for TVE1.
Both programmes will coincide with the presentation of a communication and humanities award to the National Geographic Society in Spain's annual Prince of Asturias Awards, in recognition of the channel's scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work around the globe.
TVE will also transmit Thunderbeast (1x52'), which tracks a bison herd living in Yellowstone National Park, Reflections on Elephants (1x52'), a doc by filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert for NGT investigating African elephant society; Chimps On The Edge (1x52'), which looks at how Africa's chimp population could be saved; and the multi-award-winning Arctic Kingdom: Life At The Edge (1x52'), which explores how native wildlife survives in the harsh Arctic environment.
Margaret Yoshida, NGTI's sales representative for Spain, said: "The Prince of Asturias Awards are a significant event in Spain and through TVE's support some of our most impactful programming from the past few years will be shown, giving Spanish viewers a further insight into the mission of the National Geographic Society: inspiring people to care about their world."
