C4 considering move into regional news
Channel 4 is in discussions about a possible move into regional news.
The broadcaster, which is seeking to prove its public value in order to secure additional funding, has held talks internally and with ITV about the possibility.
ITV is seeking to reduce its commitment to regional news but, according to Broadcast, Channel 4 wants to complement its output rather than take over completely.
Under the plan, which is at an early stage, regional news content would first be offered online as part of the broadcaster's 4IP initiative, before a possible move onto More 4 and Channel 4.
In its submission to Ofcom's review of public service broadcasting, Channel 4 noted that its national news programme relied indirectly on ITV regional footage. The Channel 4 News is made by ITN, which is part-owned by and provides news for ITV.
A Channel 4 spokesman said: "We are in general dialogue with Ofcom, the government and other interested parties about maintaining competition with the BBC across a number of key public service genres.
