Spain's DTT grows without stopping

These past six months have seen Spain's DTT platform grow at its fastest rate since the technology was relaunched at the end of 2005.
During this period DTT has incorporated to its "database" 2.4 million new viewers, bringing the total to 6.95 million viewers. In comparison to July 2007 the net growth was 3.7 million people.

It is not only viewers numbers that have grown but also the number of installed DTT receivers. In the five first months this year the accumulated quantity of DTT receivers sold neared 2.7 million units. That means nearly a quarter (24.7%) of the total number of decoders.

According to Impulsa TDT - the association for the implementation of Spain's DTT - although soccer’s Euro 2008 tournament has influenced this process in the last month, DTT growth has been "constant" and "progressive". In fact one of the key factors illustrating DTT acceptance is the share which has been maintaining a constant growth rhythm since last January, independently of the ups and downs in television consumption.

In short, with penetration of 37%, more than 10.8 million decoders sold so far and a viewing share of 14.9%, Spain's DTT is consolidating and the country looks likely to reach analogue switch off as targeted on April 3, 2010.

Nevertheless there are two main risks that still could mean the target date is missed, according to Impulsa TDT. First that sales of analogue TV sets continue strongly, which in spite of all government efforts registered a growth of 4,000 units last June totalling 62,000 units this year so far.

Also outstanding is the adaptation of all collective antennas to digital technology which maintains an "adequate" rhythm in its implementation. In fact more than half of the buildings have already been adapted. In this respect the association pinpoints the importance of these adaptations to be "planned" and "progressive" in order to avoid a huge demand in the last few months near analogue switch over.
