Oz Net on expansion drive
Australia Network, the international channel of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has agreed with Malaysia’s Astro All Asia Networks to extend its channel broadcasts to 24 hours. With Australia’s Prime Minister in attendance, the two companies signed the deal, which will also see some localisation of the channel for the Malaysian market, including some subtitling in Bahasa Malaysia. Co-production opportunities between Australia Network and Astro will also be explored, in particular childrens’ and educational programming.
Programming on the channel is sourced from both the ABC and Australia’s commercial networks and includes Home and Away, The Great Outdoors, Playschool, Bananas in Pyjamas and NewsHour with Jim Middleton.
Over the last few months, Australia Network has been broadcasting for 12 hours a day. The deal to extend broadcast hours is important to the network as Malaysia is one of the largest cable and satellite markets in the region. Astro has some 2.3 million subs.
Australia Network is available in 22 million homes in over 40 Asia-Pacific countries, including the Indian subcontinent.
