Jordanian ATV strike ends
Staff at Amman-based private TV station ATV have been on strike for three days, objecting to the dismissal of four colleagues and other grievances. The sit-in protest ended July 26.
According to reports from BBC Monitoring quoting a statement from the strikers: "Today is the third day of the sit-in that we started in protest of firing four of our colleagues. The deal signed today entails bringing them back to work, so we ended the demonstration," Salih Madi, who heads the ATV employee committee, told local press. According to Madi, the agreement signed on Saturday brings an end to the protest and also entails settling the situation of a staff member who was recently hospitalised.
When asked about ATV staff salaries which have been delayed since April, Madi said several employees already have received their salaries, while the rest will receive their outstanding pay cheques before the end of July, according to the deal signed by representatives of the Arab Telemedia Services, which owns ATV.
According to new station owner Talal Awamlah, pilot terrestrials and satellite broadcast of the station, whose launch faced several legal and financial hurdles over the past year, is expected to start on December 1, with actual transmission beginning in January next year.
The channel's initial broadcast was halted on August 1, 2007 by Jordan’s Audio Visual Commission for incomplete paperwork. A week later, the launch faced a new hurdle after the Jordan Radio and Television Corporation insisted that an agreement between the two establishments only covered terrestrial transmission.
In 2006, Jordan Television (JTV) leased its Channel Two, a terrestrial channel, to ATV, which now owes the corporation JD2.5 million under this agreement, according to JTV.
