Reliance cash to restructure Dreamworks
Throughout June (and our last report was June 23) we covered the move by India’s Reliance ADA Group to put a half-billion dollars into DreamWorks SKG. Now it looks like the studio might have to be renamed, not just because of the Indian cash but because a complete new entity is being assembled.
First, the Indian cash now looks more like $1bn in total (half from Reliance, half from Wall Street investors), with a well constructed plan to bring something extra to the DreamWorks SKG output table. The scheme reportedly sees at least three production houses move firmly into the DreamWorks camp. The newcomers are said to include the Ivan Reitman/Tom Pollack Montecito Entertainment, and comic Ben Stiller’s Red Hour facility, as well as others. These mentioned are currently working alongside Spielberg under his present relationship with Paramount.
One plan is for “new” DreamWorks to produce up to as many as 10 movies a year – which will require plenty of upfront cash, which Reliance is said to be happy to stump up – in return for a commensurate slice of the new business.
