New chip promises 1080p playback

DivX could be coming to a set top box near you thanks to a deal between DivX and chip maker Broadcom.

Broadcom has just made a new chip, the BCM7405, which it says will provide advanced internet provider (IP) functionality and improved video and audio performance for satellite, cable and IP set-top boxes (STBs).

What this means to you and me is that this next generation product can support the playback of DivX 1080p content, and other key integrated features for digital television content such as recording, playback, time-shifting and trick modes.

The improved compression makes it easier to move and share high-quality content between devices.

Over 100 million DivX Certified devices have shipped into the market from leading consumer electronics manufacturers.
