It was a snappy name, but Vongo never quite hit the spot with movie or broadband fans. Owned by Liberty Media subsidiary Starz, Vongo will shut on Sept 30. Vongo was also a good idea in that it charged a flat-rate $10 fee for its monthly service. However, Vongo suffered some criticism that its library was inadequate, and very much focused on Starz’s own catalogue. As at January users could tap into about 1500 movies, but only nine per cent were available in widescreen, considered a “must” for movie fans.

Critics said that back-office support was scrappy, and according to Vongo websites there were some serious technical issues with Windows-based DRM. Vongo has not helped by saying that as from September 30 even legitimately paid-for material will be automatically wiped from users hard drives.
