Blu-ray sales ARE solid
Last week we wrote about the number of people still happily buying “ordinary” DVD players and recorders, and not yet investing in the extra visual high-def merits of Blu-ray. Fresh data suggests that Blu-ray disc sales are doing very nicely, thank you!
US consumers are buying Blu-ray discs at an impressive pace. The latest numbers state that, on average, 1.14m discs are being sold monthly which is a greater number than was sold during the whole of last year and 2006 combined.
8m discs have been sold this year up to and including August 8, out of 14m units shipped to date.
US consumers are beginning to see lower prices for the hardware, now down to some $300 for some less well-known brands, and most insiders expect a burst of marketing to highlight lower-priced models, with sales activity to kick in by October in time for the pre-Christmas sales season.
Already major US retailer Target is selling Blu-ray clearance lines including a Sony BDB-S300 unit at 30% off list price, and a bargain at $272.
