Indian DTH operator Sun Direct is moving out of its south India comfort zone and will launch its service in some northern regions in October. The move will bring it into direct competition with TataSky and Dish TV for the first time, moving on to those platforms’ turf just as new competition from Reliance’s Big TV, Videocon and Bharti Airtel also appear on the horizon.

Sun Direct is planning to start marketing its service first in West Bengal, Orissa and Assam, before also targteing Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi, among others.

Sun Direct now has over a million subscribers in the southern states and will aim primarily at southerners now living elsewhere in the country. About 70% of the viewing to the platform is to regiobal channels. With around 200,000 subscribers already signing up each month, the platform is hoping to have tripled subscription figures within the next year.
