Joost wants Kangaroo to hop off
Broadband download service Joost (left) has lodged a heavyweight objection to Kangaroo, the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 joint-venture to bring free archive downloads of their programming to consumers. Neither the BBC, ITV or C4 will supply their wholly-owned material to Joost, saving up the content for the launch of Kangaroo. Kangaroo is currently bogged down with the UK’s media regulator pending approval. The consortium had originally been planned to launch Kangaroo about now, but the regulatory examination has put back any launch prospects to later this winter.
Joost, in its submission to the Office of Fair Trading argues: "(Our) inability to obtain content from the joint venture's parents on reasonable commercial terms is a key issue limiting (our) ability to compete in the UK. While the parties may argue that they stand to gain more financially through a non-exclusive distribution model, the lack of any licensing deals to date with Joost, despite numerous approaches, weakens their position on this issue."
