Starhub reveals on-demand service
As per its recent promise, Singapore’s erstwhile-monopoly pay-TV provider Starhub has unveiled its on-demand offering, aimed partly at combatting the competitive threat from SingTel’s mio IPTV service. As part of the service, Starhub will offer CBS TV shows as early as 24 hours after their US screenings, echoing a widely-reported deal between SingTel and Disney-ABC International Television, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution in July.
The introduction of on-demand programming will also see Starhub change its HubStation hard-drive set-top box offering from a purchase model to a rental one. Hubstations will from October 1 be available for S$8.56 a month. Subscribers need a Hubstation to access on-demand programming.
Due to launch today, August 20, Demand TV will offer either one-off purchases or subscription VOD. Both stamdalone single episodes of TV shows and selections of TV series, either by episodes or by series, will be available.
Single programmes include English Premier League football matches, WWE wrestling specials and Hollywood, Bollywood and Indonesian movies. Series include fare from CBS such as CSI and Numbers, with fom September, latest seasons of these series available as early as 24 hours after their US release. Also on offer will be dramas from Hong Kong’s TVB, in both Mandarin and Cantonese for Singapore’s large Chinese-speaking population.
Subscription VOD (SVOD) comes in the shape of five channels, with three – Disney Channel@Play, VV Drama On Demand and TVBJ On Demand, sharing similar programming with the linear versions. Subscribers must first subscribe to the linear versions before they can access the SVOD service.
The final two SVOD channels are Taiwanese service Ruyi Hokkien Channel On Demand, featuring Hokkien-language dramas, variety shows and music programmes packaged by Starhub; and Barclays Premier League (BPL) On Demand, available to sports group subscribers for free.
Starhub is also promising to add HBO On Demand, free to subscribers to the linear HBO Pak channels.
