One way or another US consumers will have plenty of opportunity to pick up Blu-ray players for below $300. Some units might see genuine ticket price reductions, others will benefit from advertised discount coupons or mail-back discounts. For example, Sony’s BDP-S350 unit (pictured, above) will be widely available in September and priced a shade below $300 (or about £192 in the UK). This is reportedly forcing its rivals to heavily discount its existing $300 - or so -models to prices nearer $250.

While this model and similar mass-market units will compete aggressively for the discount market, there’s no shortage of players at the higher end of the price spectrum. For example, Yamaha’s BD-S2900 is also about to be discounted – but from $1200 to $1000. Pioneer also has an ultra-high end (Home Theatre) unit in the market (their BDP-09FD) at an eye-watering $2200, but with considerable praise from the industry (“This leaves PS3 in the dust” said one review), and a specification to match.
