Indian IPTV gets legal framework

India’s government has accepted the regulator’s recommendations on a legal framework for TV services over IP networks. From now on, IPTV services will be legal rather than operating in a regulatory vacuum.
The recommendations called for cable operators and telcos to be able to launch TV services under the current TV licensing rules, rather than requiring a new type of licence.

At the moment, TV channels can be downlinked for cable and DTH platforms but there is no mention of IPTV operators in the laws. This will also now be amended to ensure that operators can access channels to offer subscribers.

There are already a number of IPTV services up and running, from state-owned telcos BSNL and MTNL. Reliance Communications, which last week launched its Big TV DTH platform, also plans an IPTV service before the end of the year.
