BBA3 subs 'besiege' Multichoice office
Big Brother Africa, Series 3, looks like being a subscription winner for Multichoice’s DStv pay-TV operation. Widespread reports out of Nigeria Aug 27 talk of long queues of visitors looking to take out new subscriptions or to activate their existing smart cards. Nigerians, in particular, have been faced with a number of challenges in regards to viewing the latest BBA series, which began on Sunday evening. Their parliamentary House of Representatives have been highly critical of Big Brother following scenes in a previous series that were considered immoral. In response to this criticism, and the threat of censorship, Multichoice made viewing in Nigeria optional, telling subscribers that they had to request activation to view the series.
Helping persuade viewers to renew their subs might be the “shower hour” where housemates can be glimpsed in the nude – or near-nude – as they take a bath.
And the show is already creating controversy. Malawians, in particular, have expressed disappointment with their selected “houseguest” (Hazel Warren, 25, pictured above and said to be “the smallest person in the house”) as not having the personality to win fame and publicity for Malawi. With $100,000 in cash, plus all the fame that Africa can bestow, the remaining 88 days of the series will do a power of good for Multichoice and DStv.
