Deutsche Telekom expands IPTV

Jörn Krieger, on 28-08-2008
German telco Deutsche Telekom is expanding both the reach and content of its IPTV platform T-Home Entertain.
This year a further 10 cities, including Kiel, Potsdam, Lübeck and Freiburg, will be connected to the fibre optic (VDSL) network through which T-Home customers can receive high definition television and surf the internet at a speed of up to 50 Mbit/s. The VDSL service is currently covering 40 cities.

By year-end, T-Home Entertain should be available via broadband technologies ADSL2+ and VDSL in around 1,000 cities, corresponding to approximately 20 million households. 750 cities and towns are currently in the coverage area.

New to the catch-up service, which enables selected TV programmes to be seen in full length after their initial screening at no charge, is content from commercial broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 as of the end of September. The television group will contribute around 2,000 titles from Sat.1, ProSieben and kabel eins, including made-for-TV films, series and entertainment shows. In November 2,500 radio channels will be added, including popular German stations as well as foreign channels.

T-Home Entertain, which comprises around 150 TV channels and an online video library with more than 2,600 titles, currently has 250,000 subscribers. Telekom is aiming for 500,000 by year-end.
