Spain: chnls worried over competition
Iñaki Ferreras, on 14-09-2008
Nearing Spain's digital switch over, television channels are starting to realise there could be no audience space for so many of the old channels adapted to digitalization as well as new digital ones.
The fact is that no channel will be able to reach 30% of share according to Silvio González, Antena 3's CEO. José Miguel Contreras, laSexta's CEO concurred, saying "there will be neither advertising nor viewers for 33 digital channels because they're not realistic in terms of economy".
Waiting for the Audiovisual General Law which covers the whole of Spain's audiovisual field and which the Ministry of Industry is about to approve the different TV channels think of two possible ways of existing: either collaborating with each other or continuing with a model of competitiviness and wait to see who is the winner.
On the other hand Elena Sánchez, director of content at Sogecable-backed Cuatro, declared the beginning of Cuatro will be tested in the digital era and "for this our option will give importance to the I+D and the development of new technologies".
But Silvio González proposed that channels start to think of less "imposing" advertisements and more "efficient" ones".
As for public broadcasters, RTVE's director Javier Pons said public television would “have to adapt to the goal of creating any type of content but all without losing its vision of social service".
