Rose Major, on 14-09-2008Smaller international investors will be able to invest in the Chinese telecoms sector, but will still be banned from having a majority stake in a company, following a government decision late last week.

The minimum capital a foreign firm must invest has been slashed by half, with those wanting to offer services nationally needing capital of Yuan1 billion (US$146 million) and those planning smaller regional services needing just Yuan100 million.

With China embracing new technologies, the decision should see more investment into what is a booming sector in terms of mobile growth but where competition from other telecoms sub-sectors has been slower.
