France’s video-on-demand (VoD) market should double this year, according to a new joint study from research companies GfK and NPA.


Over the first six months of 2008, the VoD market strongly progressed reaching almost 6 million downloads, up 61% compared to the previous year. The study found that the lion’s share of these downloads were made through triple play ADSL boxes.

“Based on the current rhythm, we think that the market will weigh between €50 million and €60 million this year, vs €30 million in 2007,” analyst Laurent Donzel from GfK notes.

The market is mostly made up of adult contents and movies, with a significant 93% volume growth of US films.

The average rental price paid reached €3.80 in June compared to €3.30 one year before, mostly because of TV series, youth and adult content.

A significant breakthrough has also been observed for subscription VoD (SVoD) with 25,000 subscriptions each month since the beginning of the year.
