India's Big TV promises HDTV
Reliance Communications-owned Big TV, one of the new DTH satellite players in the sub-Continent, has signed up more than a half-million subscribers to its pay-TV platform, and makes the outfit the fastest-growing DTH operator in India. The numbers were achieved in just 2 months of marketing, and the company says it is now on track to pick up 5m subs within its first year.
Arun Kapoor, Big TV's president, says "Our plans of defining the future of TV viewing in India are on desired course, and we are fully geared to add over 400,000 subscribers every month with an on-ground infrastructure spanning 6,500 Indian towns. Big TV's half-million subscriber milestone is equivalent to 40% of the industryís gross additions during the last two months", said Kapoor.
Big TV will take an additional 4 transponders on a Measat craft (taking its total to 12 transponders) in order to handle the extra channels. He also said that Big TV would double the number of channels available from todayís 200 to 400 by next year. Kapoor added that Big TV would introduce a DVR device by December 2008, and to have added 15-20 HDTV channels by the middle of 2009.
