US HD STB sales grow 36% pa

US high-definition TV sets are selling like crazy. Falling prices are helping, as is the fact that this is a quadrennial year when the Olympic Games and the US Presidential election helps drive an even faster-adoption of the latest TV sets. Market researchers iSupply says HDTV shipments are expected to increase at a CAGR of 20% from 97.1m units last year to 241.2m by 2012.
Shipments of 'ordinary' standard def TVs are falling just as fast as HDTV sales are rising. Supply says consumers bought 114.8m sets last year, and these volumes will shrink to 23.1m units by 2012. This year HDTV shipments will reach 124.2m units, while conventional standard-def sales fell to 86.6m.
And sales of HDTV set-top boxes are also booming. Data from iSupply says STB shipments are increasing at a CAGR of 36% and HDTV sets are expected to represent 50% of the overall STB market by 2012, from some 20% currently. Driving this growth is the fast-expanding availability - and promotion - of HD programming.
