Torm Shipping Awards SingTel with Multi-Million Dollar Contract for GMVSAT Services
Torm Shipping, a Europe-based maritime company, has awarded Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) with a multi-million dollar contract to implement SingTel’s (News - Alert) global maritime very small aperture terminal (GMVSAT) service for its fleet of 100 ships.
SingTel said that the launch of GMVSAT has made the company the first satellite service provider in Asia to offer a maritime broadband service with seamless, worldwide coverage over all major shipping routes.
Under the terms of the contract deal, SingTel’s GMVSAT service will be providing Torm Shipping with a maritime broadband solution. This GMVSAT service is equipped with advanced auto-beam switching capability that will help in moving the vessels from one ocean region to another, thereby eliminating the need for time-consuming re-configurations of satellite communications equipment.
SingTel said that it has installed a 2.4m SeaTel (News - Alert) stabilized C-band antenna for trial purposes on the deck of the Torm Vita, which is the latest addition to Torm Shipping’s fleet. This facilitates the crew members to experience broadband connectivity with speeds of up to 256kbps.
SingTel also said its GMVSAT core infrastructure is managed over its ConnectPlus Internet protocol virtual private network (IP VPN). This offers Torm Shipping with greater levels of network security and as well provides network monitoring and performance management of its GMVSAT systems.
Offering secure ‘always-on’ unlimited broadband connectivity, SingTel solution facilitates Torm Shipping to expand its office applications such as email, Intranet and Internet access and voice communications to its employees at sea more cost-effectively compare to legacy pay-as-you-use services.
Torm Shipping can as well experience improved ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore voice communications with the use of advanced session initiation protocol (SIP) phones, which are need to be installed on each vessel. These devices also provide the functionality and user-friendly features of business phones as well, says company.
Mr. Bill Chang, executive vice president of business of SingTel, said: “SingTel’s GMVSAT solution will enable Torm Shipping to reduce costs and boost business productivity by enabling its ships to become seamless extensions of the shore-based office. It will also improve crew welfare by allowing seafarers to undertake online distance training and stay in touch with loved ones while at sea.”
Leveraging SingTel’s ConnectPlus IP VPN, the maritime customers can also choose to have connectivity to their offices on land. SingTel’s ConnectPlus IP VPN provides extensive coverage in over 80 destinations worldwide, said SingTel.
