Local stations add new pay TV channels

Local stations add new pay TV channels

VietNamNet Bridge – Television stations are targeting-different groups of Vietnamese viewers by offering more pay-TV channels to capture more market share.

State-owned Vietnam Television (VTV), which leads the race in new channels, has added O2 TV, TV Shopping and Style TV- VCTV12.

State-owned television studios will launch two more new channels, Invest TV and Real TV, within a few months.

According to Nguyen Quoc Viet, director of the Cable Television's Technical Center, the new channels will target special groups of viewers and will be financially independent.

Viet said that VTV, however, would keep an eye on the channels' content.

"Pay TV is based on supply and demand. So our channels will meet audience demand and needs. Different groups have different requirements," said Viet.

Other television studios, including Hanoi Cable Television, Saigon Tourist owned SCTV and HCTV in HCM City, plan to expand the number of paid channels as well.

Apart from purchasing rights to air shows offered by foreign networks HBO, Star Movies, Cartoon Network or Discovery, local stations will pursue other offerings from film studios, music and entertainment companies.

Industry insiders said the competition among local studios was expected to increase the number of subscriptions and quality of service.

However, with every new channel, new fees were added as well, they said.

In addition to cable TV, the satellite TV market is also flourishing.

Direct to Home (DTH), the satellite TV transmission aimed directly at individual households, has a rising number of subscriptions nation-wide.

Services in the future will be sub-divided into smaller packages and charged based on received content.
