ESPN Star Sports syndicates cricket
Asian broadcaster ESPN Star Sports has agreed three syndication deals for the Champions’ League Twenty20 cricket tournament, covering territories to which the venture does not broadcast, and is promising more to come.
Australia’s Network Ten, Arab Digital Distribution in the Middle East and north Africa, and Willow TV in North America, have all agreed deals to carry this year’s event, as well as the proceeding two in 2009 and 2010.
The tournament will bring together the premier domestic Twenty20 cricket teams from countries including India, Australia and South Africa and will be staged in India next month.
Rights cover TV, internet and mobile distribution.
In September, ESPN Star Sports concluded a deal to buy ten-year rights to the event for US$975 million. The broadcaster held rights to the inaugural ICC Twenty20 World Cup in 2007.
ESPN Star Sports holds all rights to the Champions’ League Twenty20 including sponsorship sales rights. However, the company is yet to announce any sponsorship deals, even though the event starts in just over a week, on December 3. Cost for a ten-second ad during the event has also reportedly been slashed, from Rs350,000 (US$7,000) to Rs250,000 (US$5,000).
