Hispasat's new bird set for Ariane launch
Spanish satellite operator Hispasat has given its new Amazonas satellite contract to Arianespace for launch in 2009.
Amazonas 2 will be placed at 61º West. Amazonas 2 will be the fifth Spanish satellite to be launched by Arianespace following the launches of both Hispasat 1A and 1B in 1992 and 1993 respectively, and of the hybrid Spainsat/Xtar-Eur in 2006.
Arianespace will use a giant Ariane 5ECA rocket from its French Guyana space centre at Kourou. Amazonas 2 is being built by EADS-Astrium, will have a useful life of at least 15 years and will carry a total of 64 transponders of which 54 will operate in Ku band and 10 in C band. The new Spanish satellite only to be operational over “the Americas” (matching Amazonas 1), and with a launch mass of 5.5 tons, with solar panels when fully deployed in orbit of more than 39 metres. Hispasat's investment on its new satellite is in excess of EUR200 million
